Artsy, symbolic messages can sometimes be very ambiguous and not always easy to interpret. This one is about as subtle as a sledgehammer. John Lennon’s words have never been more apropos. There’s no elaborate story behind this piece (unless you want to research "trefoil knot symbolism"); it’s just a simple "plea for sanity".
Regarding construction, there are 12 changes in direction, so therefore, there are 12 different, stave-constructed, bottomless bowl sections linked together to form the trefoil knot shape (two different bowl slope angles). The edges were left thick to provide structural strength. The middle (where the piercing exists) was turned down to a smidgen over 1/16".
